Indiana Auto Insurance, Part III: Important Details
This is the final post in a series of three about Indiana auto insurance. In the first post we discussed state minimum auto insurance, and pointed out that in most situations in which auto insurance is necessary, the legal minimum is not enough. In the second post, we pointed out the large differences between state minimum coverage and the policies that we write for our insureds. In this last post, we will share tidbits about Indiana auto insurance that you may not know.
Auto insurance is primarily with the vehicle, not the policy holder. This means that if someone borrows your car (with your permission), that person is covered under your auto insurance first. Their insurance would kick in after your limit had been exhausted.
You should strongly consider moving your child onto his own auto policy when he or she leaves your household. Your full-time college student is likely still considered a resident of your household, but when Johnny or Susie moves out for good your policy only covers them while they are driving vehicles listed on your policy.
You can bundle your auto policy with your Indiana homeowner's policy (including renter's insurance or condominium insurance) for discounts on both policies.
If your vehicle is used for business purposes and driven by an employee, it needs to be covered under a commercial insurance Indiana policy. If you are the only driver, you can keep it under your personal policy.
