Indiana Auto Insurance, Part II: Our Policies
This is the second post in a series of three about Indiana auto insurance. In the last post, we discussed state minimum auto insurance, and pointed out that in most situations in which auto insurance is necessary, the legal minimum is not enough. In this post, we will discuss the differences between state minimum coverage, and what an Indiana auto insurance quote with us entails.
The minimum limits we write are typically ten times the state minimum (instead of $25,000/$50,000/$10,000; $250,000/$500,000/$100,000). In addition to this, a policy with us can include coverage for your vehicle and can include even higher liability limits through an umbrella policy.
Coverage for your vehicle is split into two parts. Collision coverage covers your vehicle in an accident, and Other Than Collision coverage covers your vehicle when other things happen, like if you hit a deer, a tree falls on your car, vandalism, fire, etc. A good way to keep them straight is to remember that Collision coverage is for when your car happens to something (a pole, another car, a building, etc.) and for when the car flips or rolls, while Other Than Collision coverage is for when something happens to the car (deer, tree, fire, hail, baseball, etc).
Since Collision and Other Than Collision are both optional, many people with older vehicles (that aren't worth as much anymore) will opt to have liability only, with the idea that if something happens to the car, it would be better to just replace it with a newer car out of pocket.
Coverage with us will also have higher limits (again, usually ten times the state required limits) for insurance against uninsured and underinsured drivers. Since 25% of Hoosier drivers are uninsured or underinsured (and this number is rising), this is important coverage to have.
Coverage against the UNinsured will make sure that if an accident is the fault of an uninsured driver, you still get the money that you need for your bodily injuries and/or property damage. Coverage against an UNDER insured driver will make sure that if someone who has lower limits than you causes you more damage than they are insured against, you will have additional coverage for yourself and your passengers.
