Other Than Collision Coverage

7/20/2011 4:00:00 PM

Last week we wrapped up a series about Indiana auto insurance, why our policies are better than most, and useful facts that you might not know/remember.  Today we will continue that trend by talking about Other Than Collision Coverage.

Other Than Collision (AKA Comprehensive, or Comp) covers your vehicle when things happen to it (deer, hail, fire, vandalism, baseballs, etc.), while Collision Coverage pays for repairs to your vehicle when it happens to other things (pot-hole, other cars, pedestrians, houses and other buildings, etc.).  Together, these are referred to as Physical Damage coverage.

There comes a time in every car’s life when you, as owner, may consider switching to Liability coverage only.  Perhaps the car is old enough, or the mileage high enough, that you don’t think paying for Physical Damage coverage is worth it, or maybe you are tightening your belt and see Physical Damage as an easy expense to cut.

Here’s one thing to keep in mind – Other Than Collision coverage is likely the least expensive part of your policy, and it covers a very wide range of perils.  When your garage burns down with your car inside it?  That’s a Comp claim (your home insurance likely covers the garage and its contents, but it doesn’t cover automobiles licensed for street use).  When the deer jumps out at 3 AM?  When you find bologna where paint used to be?  When the foul ball takes out your windshield?  These are all Other Than Collision claims.

So when you start thinking about dropping some coverages, talk to us first about keeping Comprehensive coverage.
